Social Listening: Getting to know customers or cyber stalking ?

To start off social listening is the process of identifying and assessing what is being said about a product, individual, company etc. this is vital for marketers to keep up to date and learn about complaints to get them resolved as quick as possible

Conversations on the internet create a lot of data, so it is important to use the right tools to gather the data you are listening for. Tech Target gives key knowledge of the tools that can get you started such as free Google alerts, Social Mention or customer relationship management applications.

Social Listening Tools

Lets start off with a free listening tool for those who like to be cheap and cheerful

The Huffington Post  describes Google Alerts  as a good automated, entry level way to get feedback about any kind of search term emailed to you, however doesn’t cover social media or most blog sites, this is mostly because it is a very basic way to discover when a website is posting about you.

Another free tool, however Social Mention collects data multiple platforms and results will be seen on media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. Analytics then help you acknowledge if it is positive or negative, how many sources are active etc.

Here is just a quick video with more information on social listening and just more top tools used for listening

So enough about all the tools, benefits and how great social listening is, its time to look at the other side and ask the question is Social Listening actually cyber stalking ?

First of all lets start off with the definition of cyberstalking  “Cyberstalking is a criminal practice where an individual uses the Internet to systematically harass or threaten someone” so in my opinion I think that this is a very strong term to relate to social listening which causes no harm this is here to benefit the company and the customer not to threaten or hurt anyone!

Hope this helps out and id like to encourage you to use the social listening tools explained above and get to know your customers that bit more !!
